Today was my RDO so I decided to go for a drive and visit a couple of dams looking for flowers and birds and whatever else I come across along the way I enjoy going for a drive and visiting the surrounding dams some trips of which I probably haven’t posted yet, I done quite a few trips last year but don’t think I have posted them, it is still work in progress I will get there eventually I hope. It’s the wrong time of year for Wildflowers so I was more after some photos of the birds that may be around, being the start of Autumn, I also thought there may have been some colour in the trees.
My first stop was at Churchman Brook dam, I didn’t really stay long here I just went for a short walk around to have a look, there is playgrounds, Picnic tables and toilets here, you can walk up to the top of the dam and have a look, but it is a bit of a steep climb I tool a few photos and headed off. I didn’t get many photos here this time, I will cover this one on another trip I recently did go for a walk up to the dam wall that will be posted in the future.
My second stop was Turtle Brook Picnic Area, it is a nice little spot with picnic tables, toilets and a playground there is a small path to walk around the brook and the picnic area, the dam wall is a few hundred metres away, there is a small walk trail loop heading towards the dam and back again, The access road to the top of the dam is a little further down from the picnic area which you turn up, passing the quarry that the rocks were mined to make the dam,. I wandered around for a while took some photos and headed towards Wungong Dam.
I went for a detour to have a look at
the quarry and to get some photos I didn’t go to the main dam area this time, I
had intentions of flying the drone into the quarry to get some close up photos
of the rocks and walls of the quarry but as you enter the road to the main dam
area there is a sign saying it is a no drone area which is a shame I would of
liked to get some photos in the quarry, unfortunately it is fully fenced off
and the gate is locked. So, I took some photos from outside of the fence with a
zoom lens.
It is only a short 15 min Drive to get to Wungong Dam from
Canning Dam, unfortunately you can’t drive over the dam anymore, when I was in
school I had a friend who lived close by I often used to stay overnight and we
would ride our bikes to the dam, there
is 2 access points to get to the either side of the dam, one down Springfield Rd
of Albany Hwy and the other is Admiral Rd also of Albany Hwy. This time I started
at the Springfield Rd entrance. you basically can park right next to the main
dam here and walk across the dam, but the road is closed to vehicles, there is
ample parking and toilets, but I don’t recall seeing any picnic tables here,
there is a lookout overlooking the dam.
After stopping at the main dam wall on the Springfield
rd. entrance I headed to the Admiral rd. entrance, there is a road not far from
the dam that takes you across to Admiral rd. There are also toilets here,
picnic tables and there is access to a couple of walking trails, there used to
be Gas BBQs, but they are no longer in operation, there is another car park further
along the road which takes you to a short walk trail to get to the other side
of the dam. I wandered around for a while and when I got back to the car there was
a couple of Fairy Wrens hanging around, so I grabbed my chair out of the car
sat down, and waited to see if they got closer, after a while they slowly made
their way towards me at one point not even a metre away.
I hung around with the fairy wrens for a while and
headed home.
